These quick and easy, healthy frozen treats for dogs are the first home made snacks I’ve ever made for my little pack of dogs. I’ve always been put off by making homemade dog treats, thinking it’d take a lot of effort for something that would be gobbled up in about 3 seconds flat. But with all the hot weather we’ve been having lately I really wanted to cool them down with something frozen.
I wanted this recipe to be sugar free. Surprisingly, most of the recipes I researched had some kind of sugar added, mainly honey, but I don’t see the necessity for that. Dogs haven’t developed a sweet tooth and the natural sugars within the bananas make it sweet enough. I also used sugar free peanut butter and natural yogurt.
The trick to keeping your hands nice and clean are to have them on some kind of edible stick. I used The Dog Deli’s ‘chicken sweet potato’ sticks.
As you can see, they definitely grabbed their attention…
Bilbo was sold and was in first.
Rosie Pug, who has a delicate tummy, took a few sniffs before taking quick little licks.
Poppy, our Boston Terrier, took slow licks with her wide tongue, while young Bilbo stood by.
Ferris, our Chocolate Labrador, took slow big bites out of it!
So, as you can see they were very popular, my hands have stayed perfectly clean and they lasted a lot more than just a few seconds!
How to make these healthy frozen treat for dogs
You will need:
- 3 ripe bananas
- 6 Tbsp sugar free peanut butter
- 4 Tbsp Natural or Greek yogurt
- 6 Edible sticks of your choice – I used The Dog Deli’s ‘chicken sweet potato’ sticks
- 1 small loaf tin lining with cling film
- a piece of foil
It couldn’t be easier…
- Whizz up the banana, peanut butter and yogurt in a blender.
- Pour it into the tin (lined in cling film)
- Cover tightly with a piece of foil.
- With a sharp knife, stab little slits into the foil – 2 row of 3 – evenly.
- Poke the edible lolly stick of your choice in through the holes and through into the mixture.
- Freeze for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight
This recipe is really quick and easy and makes 6 healthy snacks…
Sometimes we’ve given them a swim in the pool to cool them down – Last Of The Summer Fun – but it isn’t easy when you are on your own!
Whereas here, all you have to do is hold the stick for them. Although as our youngest Bilbo, pushed in most of the time..!
OK, as my healthy frozen treat for dogs have gone down so well. I get out just one more. After all they had been sharing.
Bilbo is possibly just blinking as I took this shot, but he does look like he is praying to the canine god of treats…
because he really goes for it this time…
and gobbles it all up!!
All that is left is the dog deli stick, which Rosie quietly tugs the end of.
My Healthy Frozen Dog Treats were a great success! You could, of course, just give them one to run off with in the garden, but then it might not be so much fun!
