Jumpsuits for women over 40

Today I want to talk about jumpsuits for women over 40. A well chosen jumpsuit can be a sophisticated option. They can show off your figure way more than a maxi dress, are just as comfortable, and carry an air of elegance. They can also take you safely from the commute to the office and even to a lunch date with just a few tiny tweeks.

I’ll tell you how you wear jumpsuits when you are in your midlife, what to look out for and most importantly what to avoid!

If like me you are short and curvy (or if you are tall and voluptuously curvy) go for a jumpsuit in a single dark colour, it is slimming and makes you look a little taller.

On the commute.

On a commute to London I pair this jumpsuit with a neat pair of ankle boots. Ones that fit quite tightly over the ankles work best. I’m a great believer that it is impossible to look stylish tottering about or limping through the tubes.

It’s also very difficult to look stylish when the wind is blowing wildly!

Wear a simple box style jacket for a smart look and a silk scarf with a touch of character and colour.

Go for flattering materials that are soft, flowing and stretchy enough to follow your curves. Avoid clingy materials though and ones that crease (too much – a little is fine and inevitable).

Go for a wide or flared leg for a more balanced shape. But if you are tall and leggy, by all means go for the skinny versions!

A long necklace with a simple pendant works well to break up the shape a little.

I carry a large tote bag and I can’t imagine a trip without it. It has room for my laptop, my high heels and more!

If you are conscious of your arms you could wear a white shirt underneath, but I wore this semi casual white tee which has a nice length to the sleeves.

Getting down to work.

I popped my heels on and placed my boots in a cloth bag. My trusty green bag was big enough to hold a spare pair of shoes making my life a lot more comfortable.

I personally prefer the look of a sharp pair of heels with a jumpsuit, but limping around London is not an option. So, I change into them when it matters.

If you can’t get to change for your lunch or dinner date do not worry! I added a sparkly broach for lunch with my husband, which I had simply popped into the small pocket of my bag (and of course, I popped on a pair of heels!).

Choose a flattering neckline. As we inevitably start to cover other bits and pieces up it is always chic to show a little of your decolletage.

  1. You look stunning, very glam! They look really lovely and stylish but I find them impractical : tricky to wear in the winter with a jumper, hard to get out of when you need the loo 🙂 but for a special occasion I’d be willing to give one a try.

    1. They are tricky with jumpers, true. But they look really great with a shirt underneath. I also think that they are a great alternative to a dress this party season – no cold legs! x

  2. I love this post! I used to wear jumpsuits all the time, but then I moved to Florida and it’s way too warm lol. Looks absolutely stunning on you, and I totally agree about the heels. Great post! 🙂

  3. Oh Maria every time I see your face I think how beautiful you are!
Agree jumpsuits are underrated by women over 40. I wonder if they feel it’s a “young” look? I hope that’s not it. I personally adore them & wear mine with flats as much as heels, super versatile & easy to style. Just as you demonstrated today xx

  4. Hi Maria – I’ve just turned 50 and am a big lover of the jumpsuit! In fact, I’ve got a special event I’m off to tomorrow night and my trusted black flared one is coming out to play! It’s so versatile and looks great with my leopard print coat 🙂 I’m not really a dress kinda girl but jumpsuits make me feel that bit more glam and ‘done’ than plain black trousers. You look amazing and love your choice of t-shirt under jumpsuit too – must try that! Lisa xx #BrilliantBlogPosts

    1. Hi Lisa! Leopard print is so in – I wonder if I could find a semi-see through leopard print shirt to go underneath? Loving sharing ideas with you! xx

  5. Oh my word, I really wish I could look as chic and glam as you! I just can’t put outfits together – I would love to pull something like this off though. I haven’t worn a jumpsuit in ages, I might have to try one out now. Thank you for linking with #blogstravaganza

    1. Hi lovely – Jumpsuits are the easiest fashion trend to wear, many of my favourites wouldn’t need matching with anything – except a pair of shoes! So feeling glam and chic is really easy with this look x

  6. I found myself completely drawn to this post. I love the idea of wearing a jumpsuit – having worn dungarees daily as a kid – and have always had a soft spot for them. The one you have on in the photos is gorgeous and I can see myself in that. Thanks for the fashion inspiration. #TheListLinky

    1. I wore dungarees as a young mum and have a soft spot for them too – I have a few pairs in my wardrobe today! I think if you love dungarees you’ll love jumpsuits – they both skim to body and are so comfortable to wear x

  7. Wow your pics are amazing, I love jumpsuits. They look really stylish but also casual depending on the accessories. Im 5ft 10 so sometimes struggle to find them long enough and without them getting tight around the crotch but I think they look great xx #blogstravaganza

    1. I’m 5ft 3 so I can get too much cloth over my shoulders haha. I think it’s important to find companies who make clothes that fit your shape best. I’m an affiliate of Closet London because their clothes are so flattering. From personal experience I can recommend them xx

  8. Love the post and talk about the tube in London. I visited London years ago on spring break in college and I remember riding on the tube. The jumpsuits are nice but I’m too heavy right now to wear one. But I’m Workin on it!

    Reply
    1. Thanks Deborah, the tubes are pretty cool, right?! It’s interesting you feel too heavy to wear a jumpsuit – I’m wearing one because I’m too heavy at the moment! I think a good one, well cut with the right cloth, can hide all sorts – a bit like a good pair of dungarees. Go to a shop and try a few – you might be pleasantly surprised x

    1. I think if you can wear something and feel amazing – you will look amazing. Confidence is beautiful. One of the reasons I am an affiliate with ‘Closet London’ is because their clothes celebrate a woman’s curves – they even have a section designed to especially flatter a curvier woman. This link will take you there. 10. Hi, I would never have thought of being able to wear a jump suit, you have changed my opinion and I may have to treat myself for wok and team it up with some ankle boots. #ThatFridayLinky

  11. I’d totally wear that jumpsuit and i’m in my thirties! Definitely smart but can totally be dressed down should be needed! Being petite but with a long body and tiny legs, jumpsuits are really hard for me to fit right!

  12. I love a jumpsuit, they’re so flattering and so easy to dress up or down. I have to admit that it took a while for me to take the plunge though – your tips are great for encouraging people who might be a bit nervous about it. I know as a shorter woman, I thought they weren’t for me, but you just need to find the right one. Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheblogLove
