Ralph is my sister’s dog and is the dog equivalent to a nephew to me. Yes, I’m one of those. Cousin to my own little pack. There, I’ve said it out loud. Loud and proud, our dogs are family! But, what is it like looking after a Westie and what characteristics do these little dudes have? Let me tell you about our Ralph
Ralph came to stay for 24 hours as his family were off to a Wedding. So, now you guys have sniffed each other ‘hello’, what shall we do first?
Yes, Rosie you have to share
Ralph has come to us looking a bit shabby-chic. Such a relief! The last time we had him he looked like he was set to trot round Crufts only for me to return him looking like he’d just been rescued from hard times
Time to trot round the garden
Westies are playful but also independent and Ralph is happy to spend ages by himself out here. That is until I mention the woods. Look at those intelligent eyes
Yup, he definitely understood that. …
Walking as a pack can be tricky
Westies are described as tough and hardy. Well, he made it over this log
Now let’s do a deal. You keep out of the puddles and you get a nice big chew when we get home
OK so, I’ve also read that Westies are quite strong willed…
Back home Ralph knows it’s time for a chew and he begs so beautifully
Chews handed out they all spread out. Poppy, why are you on Ralph’s bed?
because it’s prettier than mine…
Chews gone, Ralph is bed-less and decides to dry off on the hallway rug. As you would if you didn’t like to be dirty
Some of the day was spent keeping an eye on the birds from the dog snug
and trying to get his bed back
Well done Ralphie, have a tummy rub
Ralph is so sweet and affectionate, but Westies generally don’t need a lot of pampering
My sister Emma says ‘up, up’ and Ralph leaps into her arms. I’m wanting a cuddle with this gorgeous boy, but as much as I try, it was only when I gave up he came and snuggled beside me
The next morning we squeeze in another walk. ‘Shotgun!’
Westies are meant to have self esteem and know they are the best thing around. I think they might be on to something. There is definitely something special about our Ralph.
