Riverlight, Bourne End

Riverlight, Bourne End is a smart but relaxed restaurant overlooking the river Thames and Cock Marsh beyond. So, it gets a big tick on location. Unusually for a restaurant with a view, the food is really good and the wine is leading a revolution…

It was Charlotte, my son’s girlfriend who recommended this restaurant to us. We decided to meet up there for a good bit of noshing, followed by an Autumnal walk down the river.

Having arrived first we took advantage to take a quick look down the river.

Boats full of character are propped up on the riverside.

It’s an exhilerating part of the Thames so there’s loads to see and it felt good to be there.

Riverlight restaurant is perched up the stairs giving it the best views possible over the top of the moored yachts below.

I imagine it would be difficult to get a seat outside in the summer months, but now it’s Autumn it’s easy enough. Just wrap up, those riverside breezes can be a bit chilly.

There’s a water inlet along another side of the restaurant, so there is always something happening on the water to catch the eye. You could sit here happily for hours.

We ordered a drink and took our time glancing at the lunch menu. My Fruit Punch cocktail was so tasty it kind of slipped down before I took the photo.

The heart and soul of the restaurant is their wine revolution. The owner owns a vineyard and is passionate about amazing wines at reasonable prices.

As much as we loved sitting outside we decided to eat inside. It was a little too breezy that day, besides the tables skirt the edges of the room so view is still great and light floods in from the panoramic windows.

restaurant table setting

We decided to make it simple and ordered one of everything, treating them all as sharing plates.

Charcuterie Board; Sliced cured meats, Pickles, Toasted bread.

Beautiful quality bread and meats.

Tender Stem Broccoli, Free Range Poached Egg, Parmesan finished with Romesco Sauce.

Riverlight Three Cheese Mac ‘n’ Cheese.

Tomato and Paprika White Bean Cassoulet.

Roasted Vegetables with Cumin Yoghurt and Fresh Mint.

My favourites were the roasted vegetables (heaven. I could have, and may have, eaten the whole little bowl) and the comforting and tasty bean cassoulet.

Pumpkin, Honey and Sage Tart, Grilled Goats Cheese.

Cured, Poached and Smoked Salmon with Shaved Fennel, Caper and Golden Raisin Dressing.

A cloche brings a little drama to this dish. This dish was a hot smoking favourite of our hungry group.

Beef Sliders, Homemade Tomato Chutney, Baby Gem & Smoked Cheese.

Salted Garlic & Rosemary Triple Cooked Chips.

You have to try these! They may look simple, but the flavour of those little burgers are fantastic. The chips are creamy and crispy – my favourite kind!

sliders and chips

Caramelised Pork Belly with Smoked Apple Puree, Pickled Apples.

Crispy edges, soft and moist inside. Exactly as you’d want. The apple puree was a treat.

Tempura Battered Prawns with Pineapple and Chilli Salsa.

One dish you might have to order 2 of, we all wanted a whole one each! Really good.

5oz Chargrilled Flat Iron Steak & Salsa Verde.

Roasted Monkfish with Cauliflower Puree, Tempura Cauliflower.

Monkfish can sometimes be a bit solid if cooked wrong, but this was so soft. It was those little tempura cauliflower tho’ that stole my heart.

Don’t leave without trying a cup of coffee, the atmosphere is lovely and relaxed you’ll be in no rush to leave, and besides it’s really tasty.

The service was efficient and friendly. At the back of the room is an open kitchen, where you see a gleaming kitchen and smart chefs preparing your food.

One more glance down the river from the balcony before we took off by foot.

yacht club scene

Down by the waters edge it was fun to check out the houses, deciding (after our anticipated lottery win) which one we’d chose.

Young boys larked around on the river. What a lovely way to spend a few hours as a youngster. Like a scene from books I read as a child.

The parents these days sit stoically by, warming themselves with flasks of tea.

Once we passed the Yacht club, the path nestles between the river edge homes and their private gardens that butt up right against the waters edge.

Every now and the you get a tantalising look into these secret gardens.

This time of year the roses were in the final glorious bloom.

Occasionally the fences give way and you get to experience the view. How lovely to pull up a deck chair and wile away a few hours.

At the point where you reach a level crossing the path does shimmy over to the rivers edge once again. Sadly we had run out of time and had to turn back.

Years ago, Andy’s Nan and Grandad’s home was next to a train track. I think there’s a bit of that little boy still in him!
