If you are looking for a wine tasting near Honfleur in Normandy you should look no further than La Cave. They are located in the heart of Pays d’Auge, just a stones throw north of Honfleur harbour. A wine tasting experience can be a stuffy experience, especially when in France, but we have visited La Cave before and we knew that we would be in for some fun – French wine tasting with charm, humour and passion.
The owners come from 7 generations of wine importers and vineyard owners and are highly passionate about wine, but there is no fuss or lectures just a wealth of knowledge and advice.
They want you to discover the wines for yourself, so our host only reveals what you’ve been drinking when you’ve fully experienced it. We are a big foodie family and the men in particular have become quite the wine connoisseurs. So, this wine tasting near Honfleur turned into a battle of minds and somewhat of an elegant party game (not so elegant towards the end haha)…
PIN this for later!
We arrived on a cold but sunny afternoon pleased to see the fire already alight. The wine store was shut so we had it all to ourselves.
The room is warm and simple with smells of burning logs, the wood from crates and lingering red wines.
The rustic hanging table sparkled with wine glasses and slices of Normand charcuterie was laid out on plates.
We discovered La Cave last year. They are a progressive wine retailer, meaning they don’t just stick to the big classic brands. This is not a snobby place – they have a passion for great wine no matter the cost or size of the vineyard.
Their selection is ever evolving, which will keep us coming back. The prices are good too. He’s a really honest chap who will be straight up about when to buy, when to store and when to drink.
They also take the time to get to know their customers and lead them to new discoveries. So, the obvious next step for us was to book a wine-tasting. So, here we are – ready to spend an afternoon supping and learning about wines.
The atmosphere is really friendly and in no time we are relaxed into the event, sniffing and swirling. I pretend I know what I am doing. But mainly I’m playing with Instastories.
It’s so much fun discovering wine when your loved ones are doing it with you.
The name of this wine was on the tip of James tongue – literally!
It was so much fun listening to the guesses and reasoning behind them. The guys knew much more than us girls, but we all learnt so much from our host.
When the wines were finally revealed, you’d think we were on the final of some game show haha.
And that’s how we went on – remembering great restaurants of the past where we’d had this wine or that, daring to compare with the occasional Italian bottle (we had done a wine tasting in Tuscany this year). All the time being guided and corrected by our enthusiastic host.
Wine tasting near Honfleur is a strictly French affair!
We both enjoyed seeing our growing family be challenged to grow their knowledge in such a hands on way. If being mates with your children is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
Wonderfully, our host is enjoying our passion for wine and for the experience, claiming he loves to be with customers who share his passion as it inspires him further. The feeling was mutual.
Even our Charlotte tried a glass (or at least a few sips!). She doesn’t normally drink wine but was tempted to give it a try.
In our group, it was the boys that really got into guessing the wines. Some googling and searching was done.
Mostly there was a lot of looking at the colour…
James did incredibly well. These wines were not easy to work out. So chuffed we’ve brought up a wine connoisseur..!
Andy was great at the knowledge but mentioned something about jet-lag (yada yada). (I’m not sure he actually got one right).
Me? Well, I’m a bit of a light weight – I just had a blast!
The wines our host picked were incredibly well suited to us. Your wine tasting might be full of different wines more to your tastes.
Finally we should have thanked our brilliant host and left. Then someone had the idea of sending out the girls to buy some tarts from the nearby bakery.
We, my friends, were having Dessert wine.
It was incredible and we ended up buying 3 to take home (I’m in charge of dessert for New Years Eve!).
If you are on the look out for a wine tasing near Honfleur, I would highly recommend booking La Cave. We (as you could see) had a super time. We learnt so much and it was another fun bonding experience.
Thank you to my darling daughter Charlotte for taking most of these photos, even though she was feeling poorly and doesn’t drink wine, she was such a good sport.
This is not a sponsored post, I’m just sharing the love!
